Auslan
What started as a training course for two staff at Peel personnel has turned into a weekly, fun filled two hours.
The staff members, along with sign language instructor, Christine Foggerdy, decided to bring the conversational sign language classes to Peel Personnel.
Ms Foggerdy teaches conversational sign language using AUSLAN.
Classes are very social and include both hearing and non hearing participants.
The advantage of having a combined class is those that hear are encouraged to use correct conversational techniques with their non hearing classmates.
Those in the class who are deaf benefit by developing their English skills as well as using the current form of Auslan.
Everyday phases are practised and everyone is encouraged to use sign in class as the method of communication.
Classes are held Monday afternoons or Wednesday evenings.
